On a sunny morning in November, over 350 students from 20 high schools in the Greater Philadelphia Area gathered at Upper Dublin High School for an intensive day of filmmaking workshops, which kicked off the 2025 Greenfield Youth Film Festival (GYFF).

Students spent the day immersing themselves in specialized classes, including Sound Recording and Editing, Production and Props, and Editing and Color Correction, pitching their ideas, and gaining invaluable insights from industry professionals. Among this year's participants, roughly 70% were first-time attendees, with one student remarking, "I feel like I've gained a month's worth of skills in a few hours!" and another noting, "It was very productive, and I learned a lot of valuable information that I will proceed to apply to my future filming work."

The six professional presenters who guided the students included four GYFF veterans and two newcomers. Dave Lamm from PWP Video, whose focus with the students is usually on lighting and cinematography, has attended both the workshop and the red carpet event almost every year. Andrew Hoffman, a newcomer who runs a film and video production studio, taught Editing and Color Correction and was thinking about next year’s class before this year’s session was even over. Many cite the students' creativity and passion as their motivation for participating, noting how rewarding it is to help shape the next generation of filmmakers.

After a day of learning, sharing, and creating, students have until March 7 to create their films, competing for prizes in categories such as best narrative, documentary, and experimental film. A diverse panel of 20-30 judges from around the world, including film industry professionals and passionate cinephiles, will evaluate the submissions, ensuring each student's work receives thorough consideration. While the Festival welcomes high school students from grades 9-12, individual schools have flexibility in determining which grades can participate in the workshop. The 2024 Festival saw remarkable success from 10th and 11th grade filmmakers, setting high expectations for 2025 as these students return with additional experience and workshop training.

The culmination of all of these efforts will be celebrated at the GYFF on April 23, 2025 at 7 pm at Upper Dublin High School, where the top 20 winning films will be showcased. For more information about the festival, visit www.GreenfieldFilmFestival.org.
